Women Designers in Fashion

View point:
Women in fashion
Isn’t fashion labelled as a women’s world? Then why is it still dominated by men? You would be surprised to know that there are very few fashion houses that are led by women.

The dominant female bosses of today follow through with Donatella Versace, Vivienne Westwood, Vera Wang, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, DVF and Marchesa with Georgia Chapman. But these are the big names of the industry. What about the new and undiscovered talented designers? I feel like it is twice the battle for them. I can only imagine what Coco Chanel went through when she was the very first women to build her own empire 50 years ago.

I know that fashion is about the ability to design and that sex shouldn’t be a criterion. But the truth is, fashion is also business. And, although we have some powerful women at the top of fashion houses, they are still outnumbered by men. This is not a “battle of the sexes” issue but an interesting fact that can be debated and go on forever. Anyways, people shouldn’t be thinking about whether the designer is X or Y because what really matters in the end is the creation and the design.

Getting noticed as a designer and building your brand is yet another story but part of the same battle…
